Build a House

Building 1
Building 2

As part of LHA's Food for Education program, Peace Homes are built for poor families whose current living conditions are inadequate. With your support, it takes 2 days to create a real difference in the life of a family, setting them on a course towards a healing and hopeful future. Donors are welcome and encouraged to come to Cambodia to get involved in the process of building the house they donate.

How it all works - your questions answered

Who are the houses built for?
Through LHA's community contacts, families are chosen based upon need. When funds are available, LHA staff conducts need assessments in target areas, in consolation with the villagers, to identify families in need.

How much does it cost to build a house?
The total cost of a house is approximately US$1500.

What is the design of the house?
Houses are traditional Khmer wooden frame houses, approximately 4.5m x 5.3m. The roof is either thatched or metal and the walls are thatched.

How long does it take to build a house?
This depends on how many people are involved. However, it typically takes 2 days to complete.

Can I help build the house I donate?
Yes of course, LHA would love you to be involved in the process of building the house that you donate. However if you are unable to come along we will keep you updated on the progress.

What is the level of involvement of volunteers/donors?
Building these houses does not require highly skilled persons. Wood needs to be measured and cut, nails need to be hammered, the walls need to be held in place and thatching needs to be laid. Everyone can join in.

Who else will be involved?
To instill greater ownership of the house and build capacity, LHA seeks the assistance of villagers in the building process. Monks from Wat Damnak are also regularly involved. There is always someone onsite who has experience in building this type of house to guide, assist and instruct.

Are there any other costs involved?
After the construction is completed, volunteers normally buy some rice, pillows, blankets, and mosquito nets to be given to the family.
