16 October - World Food Day
Monday, October 18, 2010
On 16 October, together
with Peace Café we
organized an event for the World Food Day. This day marks the
founding of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
in 1945 and helps to raise public awareness on global issues
related to food and nutrition. The theme of World Food Day 2010 is
"United against Hunger".
The event was held in the temple of Wat Damnak. Volunteer Program Officer Asta Tamuleviciute made a presentation and shared some facts about World Food Day and hunger in the world. It was then followed by Ven. Thera's dharma talk about compassion and the world hunger. Ven. Somnieng, the executive director of LHA, Sum Samon, the head of Cambodian Red Cross in Siem Reap, and HE Kuy Song, a member of provincial council, made inspiring speeches about responsibility as good citizens of the society and the world to help people in need.
Five local families affected by hunger were offered to share a hunger meal and donated rice and money. In the end of the event, the candles were lid in the darkness and everyone was invited to joinly sing Michael Jackson's song "Heal the World".
